Summer Worship Wednesdays – Unchanging God

Malachi 3 6

My last few weeks could be titled “constant change”.  Every time I turn around, I am experiencing a new problem or a need to change plans.  This past weekend, I anticipated taking some time to relax in my pool.  There is something about getting on a float with a tall glass of freshly brewed iced tea and a great book that relaxes me like none other.  The night before my planned pool date, my husband turned on the pool heater so that it would be at just the right temperature the next day. The next morning, I quickly set out to get some things done so I could be free the rest of the day. The pool was calling my name and I could hardly wait!  While I was running some errands, my husband called me and said, “the heater isn’t working and temperature of the pool is 72 degrees, but don’t worry, I called the pool service and they are on the way over!”  They came.  Bad news.  Heater was permanently dead.   With a heater repair not in this months budget, I soon realized that there would be no pool time.  The water was just too cold to enjoy.  Talk about a mood change!

Isn’t this a lot like life?  Plans can easily get interrupted.  We constantly face being in a state of flux and change.  Sometimes, this can be really difficult.  Especially, when we are in need of some moments or days of “quiet stable”.   As I considered all the changes that I have recently met with, it has caused me to be thankful for the truth that God is unchanging.

Here are some thoughts to lead you into worshipping God today.

God is unchanging in His person.  God existed before the Universe was even created.  He’s permanent and unchanging.

Psalm 102:25-27 (ESV)

25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.

26 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
and they will be discarded.

27 But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.

God is unchanging in His purposes.  Our plans change.  God’s doesn’t.  Once God has determined that He will bring something about, He will.  His purposes are unchanging and will be achieved.

Psalm 33:10-11 (ESV)

10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations;
he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.

11 But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,
the purposes of his heart through all generations.

God is unchanging in His promises.  When God promises something, He won’t change His mind.  He won’t say one thing and do something else.  He is faithful and consistent, making Him completely trustworthy.

Numbers 23:19

19 God is not a man, that he should lie,
nor a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?

Let the enormity of these truths overwhelm you today and worship Him for His unchanging character and word which stands forever.
