Truth Tuesday – When God Says Wait

Esther 5

As I post this devotional, I am right in the midst of putting all the finishing details together for a beautiful dinner celebration for our son and his soon to be wife.  It is the week of the wedding!! I have been busy for days planning the rehearsal dinner.  We are hosting the dinner in an cozy, old wine cellar.   Guests will gather around large rustic wooden tables, adorned with table runners made from fresh greenery.  Mercury glass containers filled with candles and white roses will fill the room.  Every small detail of the evening has been carefully planned.   In fact, I even staged a mock-up of the event right on my very own kitchen table.  I know this sounds crazy…but I want it to be so special, and I needed to see with my own eyes what it was going to look like!

As I read Esther, chapter five, I began to think about queen Esther putting all the details into her special dinner banquet for king Xerxes, just like I have been doing for our kid’s rehearsal dinner.  I imagined her planning the beautifully adorned tables, picking out the china place settings and choosing all of the king’s favorite foods.   I wondered if she had come into the banquet hall to survey how the décor was coming together.  Perhaps she did a mock-up staging like I did!

Esther must have had so much on her mind as the banquet got underway.  Talk about pressure!  The meal had to be perfect!  The timing of her conversation with the king had to be just right!  Thousands of men, women and children’s lives depended on her every move that evening.  But, the evening must not have gone as planned.  Somewhere along the way, Esther sensed the Lord telling her to wait with her news and plan another banquet the next night.  As I read this, I thought about all the effort going into one night of planning, yet alone two nights!  Yet, Esther was willing to pause and wait for God’s timing.

“If the king regards me with favor and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the banquet I will prepare for them.  Then I will answer the king’s question.”  (Esther 5:7-8)

This story brings so much encouragement to my heart and hopefully yours… God was working in the time of Esther’s waiting.  If you read Esther 6 & 7, you will see what God does through the one day delay.  Just an incredible reminder for you and me!  In our times of waiting, God is working out more of the story details.  Even when we don’t see it!

My sweet friend, don’t be discouraged if God has asked you to pause and wait.  Maybe that job offer has not come through yet….you long to be married, but the right guy isn’t in your life…you long for a family member or friend to surrender their life to Christ…you hope for healing…you desire to have a child…you want a relationship restored…you desperately desire for a prayer to be answered… Whatever your pause…whatever your wait…in this incredible time of silence and delay –  God is weaving an amazing story that is to be revealed!

Want to be encouraged today?  Read Esther  6 & 7.  It was a sleepless night for a king.  Esther busily prepared for another banquet.  Haman continued to scheme.  BUT GOD was orchestrating His plan!

Stop for just a moment today and thank God for what He is doing right now in your pause…in your wait…and surrender your heart to trust Him as He weaves your story together.

When the waiting feels hard, read these wonderful verses over and over and allow the Holy Spirit to encourage your heart to believe and live out these truths:

Psalm 130:5  “I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait, And in His word do I hope.”

Psalm 5:3  “In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.”

Isaiah 30:18  “Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion.  For the Lord is a God of justice.  Blessed are all who wait for Him.”

Lamentations 3:25  “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”

As you read the above scripture, let this song minister further to your heart.  Just you wait and see…there is going to be a glorious unfolding of God’s plan in your life!
