Truth Tuesday – New Mercies Every Morning!

by Kathy

Mercies every morningWhen persevering through difficult circumstances it can be so easy for our emotions (stress, frustrations, anger, sadness, loneliness, tiredness, hurt, etc.) to show up and dictate how we are going to go about our day, and even direct how we will react to other people and situations.  If we let our emotions run wild, they can lead us right into a horrible pit of despair.

Not to long ago, I was reading Lamentations chapters 1- 3.  I would love for you to take a moment to read it for yourself!  In this passage, Jeremiah found himself in difficult circumstances.  The temple of the Lord was burned to the ground by the Babylonians.  Jeremiah’s heart broke as the elements of the temple – the water basin and lamp snuffers – were stolen and taken to Babylon for worshipping idols.  In the midst of the devastation, Jeremiah spoke God’s word to the Israelites, telling them of God’s hand of discipline on them.  Jeremiah did what God told him to do.  However, as he was obedient, Jeremiah faced ridicule, insults and imprisonment by the Jews.  This left him weeping and tormented within (Lam 2:11).  You could say that he was having a day (or two or more!) of letting his emotions take over!

As you read on in this passage, Jeremiah’s attitude changes.  Jeremiah remembers something that elevates his emotions from a pit of despair and weeping to a place where he can wait with expectancy and hope!

To see what changed his focus (and can change yours too!), look at Lamentations 3:21-26.  Here is what Jeremiah remembered:

  • God’s unfailing love for him
  • God’s new mercies each day
  • God’s never ending faithfulness toward him
  • God’s inheritance due him

As Jeremiah remembered these things, he was able to wait quietly!  What a great truth to live out!

As you go through your journey of persevering, you can allow these same truths to redirect your perspective.  You can praise God for all the ways He has been faithful in the past.  You can look for ways He is showing up and showing off throughout your day.  You can think about all the promises He gives you in His Word.  Each and every morning you and I can start the day with a fresh new outlook of hope, even if our circumstances stay the same for awhile.

“But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love.”  Psalm 33:18

I hope you can take a moment to enjoy this old hymn.  All the voices in this acapella number is done by one musician.  Incredibly talented voice and really fun to listen to!

Wishing you week full of grace as you count God’s mercies!

That song was magnificent!!! your devotion ties in so well with a devotion I have been preparing for women’s ministry event titled irrepressible hope, after the Women of Faith devotional. God has blessed me with glimpes of hope, one day at a time, dealing with my mom’s pain and suffering from fractures.

thank you so much..i want it to be thought provoking, soothing oils to the weary of heart, funny, all the elements of a speech. No pressure huh! This is a new type of challenge. I love speaking though and especially ministering to my sisters in Christ.

I feel so satisfied! Thank you for praying! There was a lady as a guest.who.I recognized from my past. God cleverly cleared out the craft area til just the two of us were side by side. She opened up how the message of hope was so helpful as she just lost her business. She was touched by the love in the room too. I invited her to church. She has a Bible too! She said in all her 12 years working parochial school she never felt the way she did today! Praise God for His love and guiding her to us.

Oh, come quickly, Lord. And thank you that you have left behind your great gift of the Holy Spirit to fill us with the hope of your unfailing love, new mercies, your never ending faithfulness and our great coming inheritance! I LONG for that day when we are united face to face with our Savior. Thank you, Kath, for scripture reminders to cling to while we wait.
