Truth Tuesday – Where Do You Dwell?

by Kathy

dwell

Last week, we looked at the what it means to not fret, but to trust.  This week we’ll be looking at the word dwell in verse 3 and seek to understand how we can live this word out in our daily lives.  Take a moment to read this passage in Psalm 37 and ask God to show you insight into applying this into your own life right now.

Psalm 37:1-7

Do not fret because of those who are evil
    or be envious of those who do wrong;
for like the grass they will soon wither,
    like green plants they will soon die away.

Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.

In verse 3, the Biblical meaning for the word dwell means:

  • live right where you are
  • to live in the provision that God has given you at this present time

I love reading from different Bible translations.  Here’s verse 3 in the Common English translation:

“Trust in the Lord and do good; live in the land and farm faithfulness”

God is calling each of us to not only live and dwell in the day to day moment He has placed us in, but to live each day in a way in when we cultivate faithfulness.  The word faithfulness means to be loyal to, constant or steadfast.  We are to be loyal – constant – steadfast to the circumstances that God has place us in.  Rather than worrying, complaining, or putting our focus on wishing we didn’t have to face our current situation, we need to simply trust God for it and loyaly embrace what He is allowing in our lives, asking Him for the strength we need to walk the path He has allowed.

So how do we dwell and farm faithfulness, instead of getting caught up in the whirlwind of emotions of simply wanting the hard circumstances to go away?

Here are some ideas that have been helpful to me:

  1.  I ask myself this – “Kathy (insert your name), do you really love Jesus?”  I ask myself this question because I believe that when you really love someone, you will do anything for them and do it with for the sake of sheer joy.  I want to be so crazy in love with Jesus that I will serve him with absolute delight even when life gets hard and messy.
  2. Instead of seeking my comfort and convenience, I ask God to give me a steadfast heart and show me His purpose and perspective as He works all things together for my good.
  3. While I wait for God to work in my life and show me His purposes, I look for the blessings He is providing along the way and thank Him for them.
  4. I look for ways to serve God and help someone in need.

We can choose to dwell in the land of worry, complaining or doubt, or we can choose to allow God to cultivate within us a steadfast, trusting heart.  Where do you want to dwell while you wait on God?  Will you choose to faithfully and joyfully obey Him…serve Him…worship Him?

Wishing you a grace full week ~
