Truth Tuesday – Delight Yourself In The Lord

Delight-in-the-Lord

Psalm 37:1-7

Do not fret because of those who are evil
    or be envious of those who do wrong;
for like the grass they will soon wither,
    like green plants they will soon die away.

Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.

I would like for us to consider this week the word “delight” in verse 4.   In this verse, the meaning literally means to be “delicate” and carries the idea of being pliable, sensitive and dependent on God, deriving pleasure from Him.  In essence, treasuring Him.

Take a moment and ask yourself a couple of questions:

  1. Does the meaning of delight in this verse describe me?
  2. Do I bend easily and remain flexible to what God wants me to do?
  3. Am I flexible and dependent on God when situations are not what I want them to be?
  4. Does the source of my happiness and joy come from delighting myself in God alone, or someone/something else?
  5. Do my day to day priorities reflect that I am obeying this command to delight myself in the Lord?

There are so many people and things in this world that can become a distraction to me.  Things like family, friends, home, work, fun and responsibilities.  Often, if left unchecked and evaluated, I find that these things can easily become my priority and my idolatry.  When this happens, my vision can become clouded to the real priority needed in my life – treasuring a close daily relationship with the Lord, trusting all things allowed from Him hand and delighting myself in Him.

I decided to do a little Bible research to see if I could find some verses that would show me how I can delight myself in the Lord.  Here is what I found:

We are delighting ourselves in Him when:

  • Choose to be honest.  “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.”  Proverbs 12:22 NKJ
  • Choose to obey.  “So Samuel said:  Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. ” 1 Samuel 15:22 NKJ
  • Choose to pray.  “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.” Proverbs 15:8 NKJ
  • Choosing to read His Word.  “I will delight myself in Your statues; I will not forget your word.  Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.  Make me walk in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.  I will delight myself in your commandments, which I love.  Let your tender mercies come to me that I may live; For your law is my delight.”  Psalm 119:16, 24, 35, 47, 77 NKJ

As you go through your week, ask yourself these questions –  Do my actions reflect that God is my treasure and that He is my delight?  What idols distract me from delighting myself in the Lord?  What sacrifices/changes do I need to make to treasure God in my life each day and to delight myself in Him?

Wishing you a grace full week as you find delight in Him ~
