Truth Tuesday – Sit down and rest!

by Kathy

Woman sitting in rocking chair on porch, side viewIt never ceases to amaze and excite me, when I read a Bible passage that I am familiar with, to find a nugget of truth that I have never seen before.  I want to share with you today something new that I saw while reading John 6 and the story of Jesus Christ feeding the 5000.  Before reading the rest of this post, why don’t you get your Bible out (or your Bible phone app) and read the story for yourself. (John 6:1-14).

Imagine, if you will, this incredible lawn party that developed as the day unfolded.  The disciples hadn’t planned on serving dinner (Ha!Ha!…you can tell that women were not involved in planning this huge lawn bash!).  Not only did they not have a plan for feeding these people, they didn’t have money to buy the food needed to feed this crowd.

I can picture in my mind people getting hungry…perhaps irritable with low blood sugars…children getting restless and needing to eat…the disciples growing anxious not knowing how to handle the situation…and Jesus quietly getting ready to show them, that as God, He is not limited by the impossible!

As Jesus was getting ready to perform the miracle of feeding these people, John 6:10 says this – “Jesus said, have the people sit down“.  Those words stood out on my Bible page.   He wanted them to sit and rest!  As they were obedient to this, Christ provided to them more than they needed.   He took 5 barley loaves and 2 small fish, blessed it, and fed over 5000 people who were seated…with food left over!  Can you imagine?!!

As I thought about what God was teaching me through this observation, here are some notes that I wrote in my journal for personal application:

  1. Just like the disciples in this passage, I can sometimes get so busy running around trying to solve my problems.  My solutions may be limited and not at all what God has in mind.
  2. I need to be intentional about bringing my concerns and  needs to God, sit down…be restful…and watch for how He wants to work in my life.
  3. I need to watch for God’s provisions.  He is able to do great things – more than I could possibly dream of!

I hope you will think of this passage as you go through your week.  Find time during your day to sit down, open your Bible to read His truths.   Talk with Him about your circumstances – your needs that seem to overwhelm you.   Practice resting as you watch the work that He will do in your life.   I find when my heart is quiet and at rest, I am more apt to see His work unfold.

“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory.”  Ephesians 3:20

Have a week full of grace and rest!

Feeling blessed by this Kathy! Have a great week! Kim Evans

We do need to intentionally take the time to let God do what He is supposed to do, and not try to do it ourselves. I get so busy, that I know that I do this often.
