Truth Tuesday – The Benefits of a Grateful Heart

by Kathy

We truly have so much to be thankful for in our lives each and everyday.  But in reality, life’s demands, struggles and concerns can cause us to feel quite discouraged and overwhelmed with defeated hearts instead of thankful hearts.  Or, we simply forget just to pause and give thanks because busyness has our heart wrapped up in getting things accomplished.

Perhaps what we need to remind ourselves is this – having a thankful heart can make a lasting difference in our life.  Consider these 10 benefits of a grateful heart:

  1. It gets our eyes off ourselves and helps us to focus on God.
  2. It reminds us we are not in control, but that we serve a Mighty God who is.
  3. It keeps us in a place a humility and dependency on God as we recognize how much we need Him.
  4. The more we thank Him, we begin to recognize even more to be thankful for, including the small things that we easily over look.
  5. It takes our attention off our struggles and helps us to remember His many blessings and goodness to us.
  6. It reminds us that ultimately God is our Provider and that all blessings and gifts are from His gracious hand.
  7. It diminishes our complaining.  It is impossible to be truly thankful if your mind is focused on negativity.
  8. It causes our hearts to be content with hearts that are full.
  9. It gives us a new perspective as our mind is renewed, our attitude is improved and we are filled with joy.
  10. It draws us into a closer relationship with God.

As you read these benefits, did you find yourself saying:

  • I am that busy person who is neglecting to be thankful.
  • I have noticed that I’ve been complaining a lot lately.
  • I have been focusing too much on my struggles lately.
  • I don’t feel content with life right now.
  • I haven’t been feeling too joyful lately.
  • I can’t remember when I last simply offered up a prayer of thanks to God.

You can start cultivating a thankful heart right now.  Take a few minutes to tell God something or several things you are thankful for.  Be on the lookout daily for blessings and be intentional about thanking God for the blessings that come your way.  When Thanksgiving Day comes around later this month, look back and evaluate how God has created a grateful heart and thank Him for the benefits it has brought into your life.

This reminder is always important, but I find it especially so for me in my current season of life. I have been very discontent for some time – results of poor choices? mid-life crisis? just plain tired? Whatever my reasons may be, I need to remember the bigger picture, my big and awesome God! There is always joy to be found in knowing Him!
Today I am thankful that He has put amazing women like yourself in my life 🙂

      Janice,
Thank you for taking the time to share your heart and what you are thanking God for today. I would love to encourage you to take time each day to consider things you are thankful for and give God for them. At this end of this month, please consider sending another comment sharing what God is doing in and through your life as you take time to be thankful. I would love to hear from you! I praise God today for you and that He has allowed me to point you to Him.

      Blessings my dear friend,
      Kathy
